He quit tennis and gave up even the idea of jogging.


Which meant he couldn't think how to move forward in life. To do all the things he wanted to do when the pain was constantly there and would get worse after any higher energy activities – or even longer walks in the bush - which is his absolute favourite thing to do!

As you can imagine, he was in bad shape and desperate. But... being Dutch and having that common stubborn streak known to his countrymen, he wasn't quite ready to give up on his dream of being able to live a full life! 

The problem he had was that he didn't know how to exercise with bad knees.  And he was asking the question; can you EVEN still exercise safely and effectively when you have bad knees without making them worse?!

And that's when he had his big "ah-ha" moment...

He first tried going to the doctors to see if they knew what was wrong. They couldn't give him a definitive answer and didn't help at all.

He even tried strong pain killers  they prescribed, but that just plain sucked and was not a long-term solution.

Then he tried seeing an osteopath and doing physical therapy, and those worked a little better.

And that's when I finally realised that I could help him! I’d been adapting workouts for years for people with sore knees that had been coming to my outdoor bootcamps.

 

So I tried adapting one of my bootcamp routines for Dan so that it didn't hurt his knees.

 

And guess what?

 

This time it worked!

It wasn't his fault!

He had been failing because of those ‘experts’ that look purely at your knees and nothing else going on in your body.

No wonder he was struggling...

For years they wanted him to believe the problem lies only in and of your knees, and when I figured out that it wasn't true, that he needed to strengthen his whole body to get back his physical sense of well-being... he was finally able to break out of their chains and get the results he deserved!

The real problem is those that just want to mask symptoms with a quick fix, such as prescribed pills or a sole focus on 'fixing your knees'.

THEY were the ones keeping him from discovering how to exercise with bad knees!

I used what I discovered to be able to:

- Build up the muscles around his knees and hips, without having to do painful lunges or deep squats.

- Raise his heart rate and give him a cardio workout, without high impact exercise such as running or jumping.

- Help him enjoy working out again by offering lots of different variety.

I recently developed pain in my knee when walking upstairs. A trip to the physio told me that I wasn’t suffering from any particular injury, but lacked strength and mobility.
